December 1998 to March 2005
My own limited company - Now Closed

I was the Managing Director of my own business,  a retail outfit reselling computer networking support and components to home & business customers in Devon & Cornwall.  It was originally conceived to represent me in my role as a Computer Network Consultant.

I provided the computer networking needs of businesses within Plymouth's Pannier Market via a wireless network utilising a Subscriber Gateway enabling me to commercially resell Broadband Internet access to both businesses and visitors to the market.

I also resold and supported Broadband subscriber gateways, similar to BT's "OpenZone in a Box" product, but without the underlying RADIUS network.  I believe this is the best option for our customers, who are then able to realise 100% of the resulting revenue rather than the 5% offered by BT.

Having embraced wireless networks I provided full technical support to my customers, meaning they don't just buy a piece of kit and hope it will work.  I will install all the equipment and secure it to ensure transmissions are private and unavailable to bandwidth hijackers.

I also provide technical support to a number of businesses in Devon and Cornwall requiring Novell product support.

My paper CV is somewhat more comprehensive.

Contracts

The Environment Agency, Reading

NetWare Server & PC Desktop Support

4th July 2001 to 28th December 2001

The Government sponsored agency responsible for environmental matters.

Responsibilities

General 2nd & 3rd line NetWare Administration & PC Desktop Support matters.  The Environment Agency has a very large NetWare 5 implementation covering the entire country.  One of a large team of people responsible for sites in the Thames region, reaching from Abbeywood in East London to Wallingford, west of Reading, including The Thames Barrier, Frimley, Hatfield, Sunbury and a myriad of smaller offices.  Each office sports it's own LAN infrastructure, and is connected to the EA WAN.

I start a typical day by installing a drive in a Compaq/NetWare server, a few minutes later resolving a Windows 95 issue - such as "what's happened to my GroupWise toolbar?".  This is a very wide-ranging and satisfying role.

Bevan Ashford Solicitors, Bristol

NetWare Support

16th March - 27th April 2001

Achievements

My role has been to provide 2nd & 3rd line NetWare and Network support.  Achievements have included successfully installing and configuring ARCserve IT on a DaVinca/NetWare standby server fitted with an ADIC Scalar 218 DLT autochanger.  An interesting task, as the DaVinca software regularly mounts, mirrors and dismounts volumes on other NetWare servers, enabling backups of recent data to be taken in a non-live environment.  Tests proved, however, that TapeWare was a faster and better product in this environment, so ARCserve was later removed.  Other tasks included installing and configuring a number of Compaq Insight Manager boards; installing a number of Printers, queues & JetDirect servers; updating the firmware on a large number of JetDirect boxes; and a myriad other Network administration duties.
